I’ve been thinking about 18th century romantic friendship, and now I have a new headcanon for Darcy. Clearly Wickham broke his heart, and that’s why he’s such a dick. The thing with Georgiana was just icing on the cake.
And Bingly is his rebound relationship, but Darcy’s actually kind of too broody for him. And this (sort of explains) why Caroline is so eager to befriend Jane. She wants to put a little space between Darcy and Bingly, and thinks that Jane is just a bit a country fluff, not realizing that Bingly is actually going to fall for her.
So, the Elizabeth/Darcy relationship is so satisfying because it ties up two people with terrible taste in men (aka Wickham) and keeps them out of trouble. While also being pretty much the only imaginable heterosexual relationship for either of these jerks within the scope of the novel.
