Queerbating in Constantine

Oh, Constantine.

I think the show runners would have been given a lot more benefit of the doubt if they hadn’t said so many inflammatory things, including that gem implying that if the show ran long enough, maybe they’d talk about his bisexuality. (Talking about the comic book character, first introduced in 1985: ”it was about 12 years into the character’s history. It’s not like he was introduced… it happened 12 years later.”)

And it really seems like Matt Ryan did his best, and apparently out of a love of the source material and not some calculated marketing campaign.

And, I can’t speak for everyone, but I really didn’t need an acknowledged m/m romantic relationship in the show, just some intentional reference to his bisexuality. (I think I am not alone in saying that Constantine’s explicit m/ relationship in Hellblazer is so messed up and abusive and probably all a scam that I don’t really want that to be what they show on television.)

I’m very interested to see what happens with future Hellblazer interpretations since the newest reboot (Constantine: the Hellblazer) has him flirting (in a non-ambiguous way) with a man in the first issue. And I think that is going to be an unavoidable part of the character from here on out.
