So, 25 years later, I’m finally reading Gender Trouble. And, wow, there’s a lot of Freud. Were people actually still taking the Oedipal Complex so seriously in the 80s? I have some sympathy towards the idea of socially constructed sexuality. Both because I’m nervous about the political/medical consequences of a “gay gene”, and because the idea of inborn orientation seems so inadequate to explain kinks, fetishes, and rapidly shifting beauty standards. Tim Dean’s treatment in Unlimited Intimacy is still Freudian, but is a little easier to get my head around since it seems less doctrinaire in its Freudianism.
