Hellblazer #168 A Fresh Coat of Red Paint
I’ve been trying to understand Kitty’s arc.
I mean, I love Kitty. She is totally unflappable and everything she says is a gun-moll zinger. And, miraculously, she doesn’t have to die to forward the plot.
And at the most superficial level, there’s the “look, a sex worker, we’re so edgy and noir” factor.
And showing how unsentimental Constantine is about sex, and about his body in general.
Also, a bit of cloak and dagger work on Constantine’s part, using sex as a cover to meet with Agent Turro. (And taking the opportunity to be a boundary pushing asshole, trying to badger Turro into a three-way.)
But I’m also thinking of Drinkingcocoa’s His Last Vow meta about Irene Adler as Sherlock’s model of how to wield sexuality strategically. And Kitty’s description of the performance aspect of sex work makes me think that it is both foreshadowing of Constantine’s plan and Constantine psyching himself up for what he’s about to do.
