More Stucky fic recs [Originally posted 11/22/17]

So, about a month ago, I️ wrote my first Captain America fic (Fairytale of New York), and I’ve been doing a deep dive into the bookmarks of the folks who bookmarked my fic (the closest you’re going to get to a “if you liked …” algorithm on AO3). I’ve read 200 Stucky fics I hadn’t read before, and I need to make a new rec list.

These are all Steve/Bucky, with some sort of romantic resolution. The fics I like tend to be Bucky-centric and written in a more novelistic style. I am particularly interested in Bucky dealing with trauma. But I have a pretty wide latitude for what I consider “in-character” especially in AUs.

I meant to write more about each of these, but all of my energy right now is going towards the memoir I’m writing, so I’m posting it as is.

The standouts:

The Crucible by Dreadnought (Post-CA:CW. E. 148k.) Bucky in therapy for PTSD. I cried. A lot.

Rich Man, Poor Man, Beggar Man, Thief by OddityBoddity (Post-CA:WS. T. 43k.) More grim than angsty, but beautifully done.

Thawing by Paint_Stained_Heart (Mundane AU. Bucky and Steve meet as adults. M. 31k.) Bucky is a heroin-addicted vet with PTSD and memory loss.

These Streets ‘verse by Nejinee (Police AU. Acquaintances since childhood. M and E. 51k.) Totally charming with a Brooklyn 99 sweetness. The sex scenes are shockingly hot

Also really good:

Lemon Meringue Lies by Nejinee (Restaurant AU. Best friends since childhood. E.112k.) A lot of solid scene setting. And pining.

Closed Book by AggressiveWhenStartled (Post-CA:CW. Established relationship. E. 39k.) Bucky has amnesia, again. Which makes it sound silly, but it is pretty angsty.

Grind by Claudia_flies (Canon compliant through CA:WS. E. 3k.) Pure smut.

Whip Crack by Quarra (Lovecraftian horror AU. The Winter Soldier exists but the original Steve Rogers died before Project Rebirth. E. 62k. WIP) Steve is a tentacle monster with very little understanding of humans. But that’s OK because the Asset doesn’t realize he’s human.

Stalker by xantissa for mssdare (Post-CA:WS, E. 36k.) This one is super fucked up. Steve is a terrifying stalker, and the Winter Soldier is never going to be Bucky Barnes again. But for me Steve’s obsession with Bucky is a central part of his character, and this fic let’s that play out in all its gory detail.
