I remember in my high school Russian literature class, the teacher asked us to identify the gay characters in Anna Karenina and I immediately said Kostya and Stiva because I was always eager to read queer subtext into male friendships. And, god, I just found Levin so boring; I was really grasping at straws trying to find something interesting about him. But of course the right answer is the two “inseparable” army officers, which I just found incredibly depressing
