Summary: Everyone knows the story of how James T. Kirk beat the Kobayashi Maru. But only Kirk, Spock, and McCoy know the real story. Set before and after the events of the film, this fic offers a slashtastic twist on events. Kirk/Spock, Kirk/McCoy friendship.
Kirk at his most beautifully damaged, you-can’t-look-away train-wreckness.
Rereading because suffering makes you a better person, I guess? Not only has the fic apparently been abandoned, but it goes all out on the horrors of Tarsus IV.
I’m skipping the Tarsus IV parts this time, because I may be a masochist, but I still try to avoid incurring actual permanent damage.
“Bones thought Jim was squeamish about giving shots because he wasn’t used to it. Actually, the opposite was true. He could do this in the dark, a lot more fucked up than he was right now. He had done it, more times than he wanted to think about. But that was a long time ago.”
Jim Kirk on speed is so good for me. I know my brain is miswired, and I’m just going to run with it. Like, I’m a mess, you’re a mess, let’s get high and tell each other terrible stories with lots of bravado and cry and then fuck.
Also, this issue of, You think I know nothing about drugs, and there is pretty much no way to talk about my history without making it a Big Deal, which is absolutely the last thing I want.
The other day, I got into a super awkward conversation with a coworker who’s in med school about motivational interviewing vs 12 step programs vs other options, and he asked me, ‘Have you ever been to an AA meeting,” and I said no, because actually I have some very complicated feelings about AA, particularly after an attempted 13-stepping by an ex-boyfriend when I was trying to quit heroin. But, like, that’s not a question you can just ask somebody. He knows literally nothing about my history. It put me in a super bad mood all day.
The first time I read this, I assumed that Martian meth was mentioned in the 2009 movie, or maybe was a reference to some other well known work, but google is not turning anything up. Maybe Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldrich? Or some cyberpunk book I’m unaware of? Also, I never actually read Stranger in a Strange Land.
Or maybe it’s just really amazing world building?
